Industry EventsThere are many interesting conferences and events related to various aspects of the broadband home. Here are a few that we have attended recently or plan to attend, either as speakers or to keep up to date on what's new and important. We'll cover them in our report on the Broadband Home. WCA’s 14th Annual International Symposium & Business ExpoNovember 4-6, 2008 Fairmont Hotel. San Jose CA, USAwww.wcai.com/events.php The Wireless Communications Association International (WCA) Symposium will convene key players from the worldwide wireless broadband community to discuss business, technology, policy, investment and security issues. The symposium will focus on the developing ecosystem for WiMAX and other Fourth Generation networks. Speakers from the US FCC, Clearwire and Xohm are among those on the agenda. Now in its seventh year, the show is targeted at telecom carriers who are interested in learning the latest about broadband and entertainment solutions. This year’s show will contain a large exhibit hall and expanded educational tracks covering MobileTV, NetVideo, The Consumer Experience, IOC Issues, Technology, and Differentiation Strategies. IPTV World Forum North AmericaJuly 22-23, 2008 McCormick Place Convention Centre, Chicago, IL, USAwww.iptv-northamerica.com IPTV is on course to become a credible Pay TV platform in North America, with Verizon FIOS TV and AT&T reporting continuing growth. IPTV World Forum – North America is part of a series of IPTV events organized by Informa Telecoms & Media globally. It will address the question of where North American IPTV providers are going to find their subscribers and what services must they provide (and evolve) in order to differentiate themselves in the crowded Pay TV marketplace. We'll cover the show in the next issue of our newsletter. The Cable Show ‘08May 18-20, 2008 Morial Convention Center New Orleans, LA, USA2008.thecableshow.com The Cable Show is the year’s biggest cable event. It was preceded by the tru2way Developers' Conference on May 17-18. There was a mix of exhibits, sessions and events focusing on technology, strategy, the regulatory environment, business models and more. We covered the tru2way conference and the cable show in Cable Show 2008 (BBHR July 10, 2008). The Consumer Electronics Show (CES)January 7-10, 2008 Las Vegas, Nevada, USAwww.CESweb.org/ CES is the largest technology show in the United States and the largest annual consumer technology show in the world. It includes a wide array of products, including home networking, mobile electronics, wireless, audio, gaming, digital imaging and home theater. For us, this is always a “don’t miss” event. TelcoTV Conference & Expo 2007October 22-25, 2007 Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta, Georgia, USAwww.scievents.com TelcoTV is devoted to exploring the converging ecosystems of broadband and entertainment. The show started six years ago with a focus on telephone company provision of TV services,and has expanded to include MobileTV, IPTV and NetVideo, and their impact on service providers. We covered this show in TelcoTV 2007: Approaching The Tipping Point (BBHR December 17, 2007). 2007 FTTH Conference & ExpoThe Content Revolution—Filling the PipeOctober 1-4, 2007 Walt Disney Swan & Dolphin Resort, Orlando, FL, USA www.ftthconference.com The FTTH Conference & Expo, sponsored by the FTTH Council, focused on the content that will fill the fiber pipe, as well as the technical, business and implementation decisions that service providers, developers and municipalities are making. On Wednesday, October 3, we gave a presentation Home Networking Technologies for Today and Tomorrow. On the morning of October 4 we held a half-day workshop "Everything You Needed to Know About Home Networking and Were Afraid to Ask". We covered this show in The 2007 Fiber to the Home Conference: Heaven for Bandwidth Hogs (BBHR October 19, 2007). CTAM Summit 07July 23--25, 2007 Washington, D.C. USAwww.ctam.com/conferences/summit The CTAM organization is dedicated to cable telecommunications marketing. This year we were invited to run an interactive workshop on home networking, as part of CTAM’s "Digital Products" track. The session focused on the options for moving media throughout the home as digital media proliferates. Our discussion included what’s changing in the home, what service providers and others are doing to respond, and the wired and wireless networks that reach across the PC, TV and mobile phone. Fourth Annual Healthcare Unbound Conference & ExhibitionSpecial Focus on Remote Monitoring & Home TelehealthJuly 16-17, 2007 Marriott San Francisco Airport, San Francisco, CA, USA www.tcbi.org/hu2007/index.html Innovative technologies are driving opportunities to serve health consumers in new ways and settings. The program had a strong focus on use of remote monitoring / home telehealth technologies for wellness promotion and disease management, with a special emphasis on Baby Boomers and the elderly population. WCA 2007June 12-15, 2007 Omni Shoreham Hotel, Washington, District of Columbia, USAwww.wcai.com The Wireless Communications Association's annual WCA conference is a major event for wireless broadband. This year's special 20th anniversary show convened global leaders in key wireless broadband segments including WiMAX, municipal wireless, 700 MHz, government, public safety, and more! The Cable Show 2007(NCTA)May 7-9, 2007 Mandalay Bay Convention Center, Las Vegas, NV USAwww.thecableshow.com The Cable Show (previously called "The National Show") is the event of the year for the cable industry. Sponsored by the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA), it now includes the CableNet exhibit by CableLabs. TelcoTV 2006November 6-8, 2006 Gaylord Texan Resort, Dallas, Texas, USAwww.telcotvonline.com/telcotv06/ TelcoTV provides in-depth information on the much talked about area of IPTV. This conference and expo covered the areas of researching, building, marketing and successfully selling IPTV experiences from the service provider's point of view, targeted for telecom professionals with stakes in all aspects of the IPTV value chain. We covered the show in TelcoTV 2006: Start of the Second Wave (BBHR December 13, 2006). WiMAX World 2006October 10-12, 2006 Boston, MAWith mobile WiMAX getting ready for market, we attended WiMAX World 2006 for an update from key industry players. We covered the show in WiMAX World 2006: "Wi-Fi On Steroids" (BBHR November 5, 2006). UPLC Broadband Power Line 2006September 17-20, 2006 Charlotte, NCUPLC brings together utilities and technology companies working on broadband over power line (BPL). Although utilities are also working on retail—broadband to consumer—applications, the focus at this show was largely on internal utility applications. We covered the show in SmartGrid: The Road to BPL? (BBHR October 17, 2006). Fall VON 2006September 11-14, 2006 Boston Convention & Exhibition CenterJeff Pulver's Voice on the Net (VON) conference celebrated its tenth anniversary in Boston. This year's headline was the rapid emergence of video over IP, highlighted by a parallel "Video on the Net" conference. We covered the show in VON: "V" Is For Video (BBHR October 17, 2006). WCA 2006June 27-30, 2006 Omni Shoreham Hotel, Washington, DC, USAwww.wcai.com/event/06/06overview.htm A symposium and expo focused on important developments in broadband wireless. The 2006 National Show (NCTA)April 9-11, 2006 Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta, Georgia, USAwww.thenationalshow.com The National Show is the event of the year for the cable industry. Sponsored by the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA), its tradeshow now includes the CableNet exhibit by CableLabs.
